COMPULSORY ATTENDANCE IN THE SECOND SEMESTER WILL NOT BE REQUIRED FROM STUDENTS STUDYING IN QUAKE-HIT PROVINCES

Minister of National Education Mahmut Özer made statements from Malatya regarding the continuation of education in quake-hit regions by connecting to the NTV live broadcast. Minister Özer stated that compulsory attendance in the second semester will not be required from students studying in quake-hit provinces.

Noting that they are trying to manage the processes in unity by using all the means of the state, Minister Özer stated that they will come out of these difficult days quickly.

Reminding that education was suspended for two weeks in the earthquake areas, Özer emphasized that they have taken a decision and started to transfer students registered in the quake-hit provinces to an equivalent school all over Türkiye, regardless of their residential address and without seeking any conditions.

Stating that they will help families upon their requests, Minister Özer noted that two issues become prominent in the meetings held with students and teachers in the field.

Stating that they will not require compulsory attendance at all classes and levels in the second term from students in ten quake-hit provinces, Özer said that teachers in Türkiye, especially in the earthquake-hit regions, are on administrative leave. Regarding the statements of some substitute teachers working in the tents saying they are not paid, Özer stated that the Ministry will continue to pay the salaries of substitute teachers, master trainers and all teachers participating in the rescue efforts in earthquake areas. Özer said that they will overcome these processes quickly together.

Stating that they are working to make the transfers on easy terms, Minister Özer gave the message that the suspension of education in ten provinces can be extended further.

Underlining that the Ministry of National Education is on the field with all its capacity, Minister Özer said that they provide citizens with accommodation in schools, dormitories, practice hotels and teachers houses. Stating that 800 thousand hot meals, produced in vocational high schools and practice hotels, have been distributed, Özer emphasized that all teachers are voluntarily working in the field.

Noting that many teachers from different provinces came to the earthquake region to support search and rescue and aid activities, Özer said that there are more than 1 thousand teachers in Malatya who rushed to help from other provinces. Özer underlined that they are also conducting a study regarding the permissions of these teachers.
