OVER 16 MILLION STUDENTS AND PARENTS HAVE USED THE GUIDANCE SERVICES OF THE MINISTRY OF NATIONAL EDUCATION

After the suspension of face to face education in schools due to the Covid -19 pandemic, the Ministry of National Education has implemented dozens of measures to support students in the academic field through distance education, to help their social, emotional and career development as well as to maintain their resilience together with their families. Sharing that a total of 16 million 312 thousand 807 people were provided with guidance by the Ministry during the Covid- 19 pandemic, the Minister of National Education Ziya Selçuk said, "In this process, where the world is going through the hoop, I am glad that we have reached a large part of our 18 million students and millions of parents."

As of the day when face to face education was suspended, guidance and psychological counseling services, which were given in group and individually by guidance counsellors working in educational institutions and counseling and research centers, were integrated to the e-Guidance system. According to data received from the e-Guidance system where it is possible to access class, school, district and country- wide studies on guidance, handling stress, healthy life and psychosocial support programs offered to groups within protective and preventative measures ranked first.

While the most studied subjects in instructional counselling services were time management and motivation; in vocational guidance job definition, points to be considered in choice of profession were on the top. Students individually asked for help with compliance, motivation and goal setting. In the guidance services offered to parents as well as students, healthy living and psychosocial support were prominent subjects. It was seen that the parents mostly asked for help on academic subjects.

Sharing that the Ministry has provided guidance services to 9 million 623 thousand 325 students and 6 million 689 thousand 482 parents between March 23 and May 31, 2020, Selçuk said "As we continue to support our students on academic fields with distance education methods we put emphasis on psychosocial support activities within this difficult period. We frequently have published guides and booklets. In this context, we have previously published guides that are prepared separately for our children who need special care and their parents by our Directorate General for Special Education and Guidance Services to support the normalization of the anxiety caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. I can gladly state that guides are actively used in the field. In addition, by establishing a "Special Education and Guidance Services Information Line" call centers in 81 provinces, our special education and guidance counsellors working in Counseling and Research Centers (RAM) support our students and parents on the phone. We publish biweekly support book for pre-school and primary school children based on characters named "Elif and Alp". We also provided support with two separate guides to support safe internet use and protect children against cyber bullying.

Minister Selçuk added; "Our guidance activities continue intensively to support our students' academic, social, emotional and career development as a whole. I am glad that we have reached a large part of our 18 million students and millions of parents, and move on when the world has passed an important test. I would like to thank Deputy Minister Mahmut Özer who coordinated this process, Director General of Special Education and Guidance Services Mehmet Nezir Gül and his colleagues and special education and guidance teachers."
